The great thing is that the game actually refills your health after every battle, and if you die, you can restart right before that battle, and there are no random encounters, so you can avoid battles and yeah. It works once you know what you're doing, but battles can take quite long. Tl dr You have to use the job-switching system effectively to increase the stagger gauge. It's also worth noting that you can only have six paradigms ready at once, so you need to think about which ones will be useful in the area that you're in. You have to know which paradigms to use and when, as they're all useful for different situations, and you will often be required to change your strategy depending on what type of enemy you're facing. You can switch between them on the fly during battle, and this is why FF13 really doesn't play itself. In the menu, you can create "paradigms" in which each character takes on a certain role. Commandos are your physical attackers, Ravagers cast damaging magic, Medics cast healing magic on the party, Saboteurs lower the enemy's defense and can inflict status ailments on enemies, Sentinels are meat shields that raise your party's collective defense - very useful - and Synergists cast magic that strengthens the party. How it works is that there are certain "roles" that each character can acquire throughout the game. The paradigm system is introduced early on in the game, and is a very interesting take on the job system seen in previous games that actually allows you to switch classes during battle. In fact, most of what you'll be doing in combat is switching roles according to your situation. It should also be noted that this game brings back job.err I mean role switching. Since you will be in combat 80% of the time, it creates a very drawn out and boring gameplay experience. This doesn't add any strategy to combat, all it does is make battles twice as long.

I just cannot for the life of me understand this mechanic. Eventually, your attacks will fill it and the enemy will enter stagger mode, at which point your attacks actually do a good amount of damage to its life bar. See, your attacks normally don't really deal much damage, but they fill the enemy's stagger gauge. My biggest problem with combat in this game is the Stagger gauge, which in my opinion is the stupidest idea ever put in a JRPG. True, you can just not use it, but since battles last so long, you start to rely on this option since it works fine. Basically, we still have the ATB gauge, but this time we have an auto-battle option that decides your commands for you. The turn based combat received a major overhaul.
